On October 8, 2005, a major earthquake hit Pakistan, severely damaging local hospitals and health facilities, as building the capacity of local hospitals was amongst the objectives of Disaster Management Center Abbottabad, Therefore DMC received a donation of heavy duty wheel chairs in April 2006 from Association of Pakistani Physicians of New England (APPNE), Boston USA and lost of medical equipments from International Medical Equipment Collaborative, USA, that is an organization that collects equipment from various hospitals of USA, renovates and donates this equipment to third world countries. Moving of containers to Disaster Management Center Abbottabad with new and revamped medical equipment, hospital furniture, medical and surgical supplies was coordinated by Association of Pakistani Physicians of New England, Boston, USA, co-sponsored by Rotary International.
In the containers along with medical equipments there were 280 wheel chairs, that were distributed amongst the people of earthquake hit areas of Mansehra, Balakot, Muzaffarabad, also some deserving cases and organization from district Abbottabad were benefited like, Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad, Kingston School for blinds, Limb Loss Foundation Abbottabad & UK Rehab Trust Abbottabad in the year 2006. Disaster Management Center Abbottabad managed it logistically, counted, sorted the equipments, developed inventory and stored at its warehouse. A wheelchairs donation ceremony was held at the training hall of Disaster Management Center. Prof. Abdul Aziz Awan, Chairman AMA/DMC handed over 50 high quality wheelchairs to Dr. Zafeer Hussain, MS Ayub Teaching Hospital [ATH] Abbottabad. Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Mian Soomro accompanied with Senator Shahid Ali Khan and others visited Disaster Management Center Abbottabad on May 19, 2007 and in a small ceremony handed over the equipment to Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad, Thealaseamia & Eye Center of Abbottonians Medical Association and health facilities supported by the Disaster Management Center, Abbottabad.
The 2nd container arrived in October 2008, which was unloaded, sorted, coded & stored at DMC’s warehouse by the workers of DMC. Container included Medical Equipments, Surgical Items, Hospital Beds, Furniture, OT accessories & Disposable items. Chairman Abbottonians Medical Association /Disaster ManagementCenter Abbottabad, Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Awan handed over the equipments to the Prof. Dr. Alamzeb Manan, Chief Executive Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad in a ceremony held on 9th February 2009.
